Districts Impacted
Project Summary
Beginning August 12, 2024, the intersection where Route 22 meets Routes 124 and 151 will be reconstructed into a roundabout.
The intersection of Missouri Routes 22, 124, and 151 in Centralia needs improvements. The existing four-way intersection creates less-than-optimal safety conditions for traffic. By installing a roundabout, the potential impact points for crashes, especially t-bone crashes, is greatly reduced, lowering the chance of a serious or fatal crash. The plans include improvements that will enhance safety, drivability, and traffic flow. The project is expected to be finished by 2025.
Project Details
When:
This project is scheduled to begin August 12, 2024, and be complete by 2025.
Cost:
The estimated construction cost for the project is $1.1 million.
Work Taking Place:
The project plans include constructing a roundabout at the intersection of the Missouri Routes 22, 124, and 151. The proposed intersection layout will improve traffic flow and safety at the intersection.
Traffic Impact:
Route 151 will be temporarily closed for up to 28 calendar days to construct the north portion of the roundabout and will have a signed detour. Routes 22 and 124 will be staged to construct the remaining portions of the roundabout and at least one lane will remain open.
Project Progress
A project to construct a roundabout at the intersection of MO Routes 22, 124, and 151 is currently being designed by the Missouri Department of Transportation. The total construction cost for this project is $1.1 million. This cost may change.
A public informational open-house was held Jan. 18, 2024, from 4:30 – 6 p.m., at Centralia City Hall Council Chambers. Exhibits outlined the work being planned and the road changes to be used during construction.
The public is invited to leave comments and questions for the project team, either in person, online or by mail. Mailed comments should be postmarked on or before Jan. 31 and addressed to:

The project was part of MoDOT's May 2024 letting when contractors submitted competitive bids. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a $1,219,030.30 contract to Capital Pavine & Construction, LLC as part of their June 2024 meeting. At that time, the contractor was given a notice to proceed date, which is the earliest date the contractor may begin work.
Construction began Aug. 12, 2024, with the closure of Route 151 in order to construct the northern half of the roundabout. On Sept. 5, 2024, the contractor reopened Route 151.
Construction on the southern half of the roundabout continues. By contract, the contractor has 72 calendar days in which to complete the project.

Project Overview
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why is MoDOT replacing the Route 22 Intersection?
The existing intersection has a complicated 4-way juncture whose safety falls short of optimal standards. The new structure will be up to current standards and improve the drivability and safety for motorists.
How will the construction affect traffic?
The project will involve staged single lane closures in addition to Route 151 being briefly closed with a signed detour.
Can large trucks and trailers get through?
The truck apron is a raised section of concrete around the central island that acts as an extra lane for large vehicles such as buses, farm equipment and semi-trucks with trailers, giving large vehicles extra space in the roundabout. The back wheels of the oversize vehicle can ride up on the truck apron so it may easily complete the turn, while the raised portion of concrete discourages use by smaller vehicles.
