Construction is expected to be complete by mid 2019.
During the last 10 years, 8,752 Missouri motorists left on a trip and never made it to their destination. This project uses public and private industry solutions to reduce crashes and save lives.
What is the project?
The St. Louis District Safety Design Build project will make safety improvements at 31 locations across Franklin and St. Charles Counties. A variety of safety improvements will be made, including pavement treatments, reflective pavement markers, rumble strips and flashing stop signs. Over a 10 year period, the improvements are expected to reduce the number of fatal and serious injury crashes by more than 70 people.
Why is this project being done?
MoDOT takes the safety of the traveling public very seriously. This project allows MoDOT to make multiple safety improvements across two counties. Using the Design-Build method, MoDOT is able to implement the safety solutions quickly, efficiently and cost effectively. Fast implementation of safety improvements saves more lives.
Where will these improvements be made?
The improvements will be made on various routes in Franklin County and St. Charles County. There are improvements being made at 16 different locations in Franklin County and 15 different locations in St. Charles County.

Across the lane rumble strips - A road safety feature that causes vibration and rumble noises to alert drivers of a potential danger. Across the lane rumble strips are placed across the travel lanes to alert drivers of an upcoming intersection or other hazard.
Centerline rumble strips - A road safety feature that causes vibration and rumble noises to alert drivers of a potential danger. Centerline rumble strips are placed on the centerline of undivided highways to warn drivers they are leaving their travel lane and heading into oncoming traffic.
Diamond grinding - A pavement improvement technique that restores the surface by removing irregularities.
Dynamic signal warning flasher - A flashing sign that warns motorists when the signal at the next intersection is red or about to turn red.
Edgeline rumble strips - A road safety feature that causes vibration and rumble noises to alert drivers of a potential danger. Edgeline rumble strips are placed at the end of the pavement to alert drivers they are about to run off the road.
Flashing beacon - A flashing red light mounted on top of a stop sign to help draw attention to the sign.
Florescent curve signs - Bright yellow signs warning of a curve in the roadway.
Guardcable - Twisted wire ropes mounted on posts in the middle of a median to help prevent vehicles from crossing over into oncoming traffic.
High friction surface treatment - A pavement process that involves the application of higher friction pavement to help drivers maintain better control..
Inlaid pavement marker - Striping on pavement that is either laid in a tapered grove in the pavement. Some locations will actually have groove in the pavement markers.
Intersection conflict warning system - A series of signs warning motorists of an upcoming intersection and that there are vehicles coming off the side roads of that intersection.
LED stop sign - A stop sign with LED flashing lights around it to draw more attention to it.
Reflective signal backplates - A yellow backplate added to a traffic signal in order to improve the visibility.
Right turn angle changes - Changes to the right turn lane to make the turning motion more severe. This helps reduce accidents from people pulling out into traffic without stopping.
Shoulder rumble strips - A road feature that causes vibration and rumble noises to alert drivers of a potential danger. Shoulder rumble strips are placed at the edge of a lane to alert drivers they are leaving the lane.
Stop ahead pavement markings - Pavement markings warning drivers of an upcoming stop sign.
Thin lift of asphalt - A layer of asphalt to help preserve the life of the road.
Turf shoulders - Shoulders made out of earth and compacted rock base rather than a paved surface.
Widen edgelines -Widening the outside yellow stripe to allow for longer life.
