Description and Significance

Bridge X0190, locally known as Hackleman Bridge, is a 221’ in length with one Warren Pony Truss and four steel stringers. The configuration of the bridge is four approach spans (28’-27’) – (110’) pony truss – (27’- 27’). The bridge has timber abutments and bents and concrete dumbbell piers. The deck material is concrete with a bituminous wearing surface.

Bridge X0190 is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion C as an excellent example of a late, standard plan state highway system riveted pony truss.

Bridge X0190 was constructed as part of project number S-190(2) on Route SD. Bids were received for grading, paving and constructing bridges and culverts on the project on April 1, 1949, the low bidder was Ben D. Prater of Harrisonville, Missouri, with a low bid of $51,525.12. The project was awarded on April 11, 1949. The construction of the bridge corresponded with the construction of Osceola Dam and Reservoir.

MoDOT’s Historic Preservation Section is now accepting proposals for the relocation and reuse of the bridge or its components until April 30, 2025. A proposal checklist is available MoDOT’s Free Bridges website (http://www.modot.org/freebridges/). Preservation covenants may accompany the bridge.
