MoDOT: I-44 Corridor Improvements Project in Springfield Focus of Public Meeting Tuesday, March 19

Springfield – Those interested in a project to improve traffic flow along the I-44 corridor in Springfield are invited to a public meeting to discuss proposed improvements and project information on Tuesday, March 19, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

The come-and-go style meeting will be held 4:30 – 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 19, at Crossway Baptist Church, 2900 N Barnes Ave, Springfield. No formal presentation is planned. Those who attend may come at any time between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. to learn about the project and ask questions.

Project highlights:

  • Widening I-44 to 6 lanes between Missouri Route 13 (Kansas Expressway) and U.S. Route 65
  • Build southbound Missouri Route 13 (Kansas Expressway) to eastbound I-44 flyover ramp
  • Norton Road intersection improvements and underpass
  • Replace the Melville Road bridge over I-44 (includes adding pedestrian facilities)
  • Replace the following bridges carrying I-44 over city streets:
    • Broadway Avenue Bridge
    • Grant Avenue Bridge
    • National Avenue Bridge
  • Rehabilitate Route EE (Division Street) Bridge over I-44
  • Build pedestrian underpass and trail improvements east of Grant Avenue
  • Resurface I-44 between west of Missouri Route 266 (Chestnut Expressway) and east of Missouri Route 125
  • Build a sound wall south of I-44 from the National Avenue bridge west, approximately 2,550 feet

Expected traffic impacts during construction:

  • Lane Closures on I-44, Norton Road, Kansas Expressway & Route EE (Division Street) bridge
  • Road and bridge closures for the following locations:
    • Broadway Avenue Closed up to 140 days
    • Grant Avenue Closed up to 140 days
    • National Avenue Closed up to 140 days
    • Route EE Bridge Closed up to 90 days
    • Melville Road Bridge Closed up to 140 days
  • I-44 will maintain two lanes of traffic in each direction, except for short duration closures during night time hours
  • Narrowed lanes and traffic shifts on Route I-44
  • I-44 exit ramp closures
  • During higher traffic volume, drivers can expect delays

 

Construction for the following projects is scheduled to begin in 2025:

  • Widening I-44 between Kansas Expressway and Route 65
  • Melville Bridge Replacement
  • Resurface I-44 west of Route 266 and east of Route 125
  • I-44 Sound Wall

Construction for the following projects is scheduled to begin in 2027:

  • I-44 and Kansas Expressway Interchange Improvements
  • Route EE Bridge Rehab

The estimated project cost is $121.1 million.
