All lanes, ramps on U.S. Route 54 in Jefferson City now open

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – U.S. Route 54 in Jefferson City and all associated ramps are fully open as of the morning of Friday, Nov. 8. Bridge rehabilitation work along this vital corridor began in mid-July and wrapped up this week, allowing traffic patterns to return to normal.

Contractors working with the Missouri Department of Transportation narrowed U.S. Route 54 to one lane in each direction between south of the Missouri River to Missouri Boulevard on July 15. The head-to-head configuration was necessary to complete overpass bridge rehabilitation work, including joint and deck repairs and a concrete overlay, over U.S. Route 50 and McCarty Street. The joint deterioration on both the west and eastbound bridges was more extensive than anticipated and required additional work and additional time.

“We were dedicated to making the necessary repairs to prolong the lifespan of these overpass bridges,” said MoDOT Resident Engineer Chris Brownell. “We appreciate everyone’s patience through this work and understand that it has been an inconvenience.”

Some work remains on the underside of the bridges. The contractor is planning to complete this over a couple of nights into early next week. For the safety of crew members and the traveling public, one lane of U.S. Route 50 will be closed over night, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., while the work is performed. Some ramps in the area may be closed during this nighttime work.
