MEDIA ADVISORY: MoDOT to host Media Event for Providence Road bridge demolition over I-70 on May 28

The Missouri Department of Transportation is hosting a media event regarding the upcoming closure and demolition of the Providence Road bridge over Interstate 70 scheduled to occur this weekend. The media event will begin at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, at the University of Missouri’s General Services Building located at 900 E. Stadium Blvd. Columbia, MO 65201. This event will cover the details of the bridge closure, traffic impacts to I-70 and Providence Road, and will also provide an opportunity for footage of/interviews with the project director. Full details about this demolition work can be found here: https://www.modot.org/node/89119.

Following the media event, the media is invited to attend MoDOT's Central District’s public information meeting for the MO Route 163 Bridge Deck Replacement over Hinkson Creek, which will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the same location in Room 131. MoDOT officials will be present to answer questions about this project. The public meeting is for a separate project from the work occurring on Providence Road over I-70.

Improve I-70: Rocheport to Columbia is a $441 million Design-Build project that will add a third lane of travel in each direction and make other improvements along 14-miles of I-70 between approximately the Missouri River Bridge at Rocheport and U.S. Route 63 in Columbia. This project was awarded in December 2025 to The ESS Team, led by contractor Emery Sapp & Sons and their designer Parsons. It is the fourth construction project awarded within MoDOT’s Statewide Improve I-70 Program. Construction began in Spring 2026 and is scheduled for completion in late 2029.

Missouri’s FY2024 budget, approved through the state legislative process and signed into law by the governor, provides $2.8 billion in General Revenue to build a third lane of I-70 across the state. The program will plan, design, construct, reconstruct, rehabilitate, and add a third lane in each direction on nearly 200 miles of I-70, from Blue Springs to Wentzville. Total program completion is anticipated by the end of 2030. For more information on the Improve I-70 Program and to sign up for program e-mails, visit http://www.modot.org/improvei70.
