Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMVs) are essential to the nation’s economy, ensuring the timely delivery of goods and products across the country. To enhance roadway safety, the MoDOT monitors CMV-involved fatalities. This data helps guide targeted education, enforcement initiatives, and infrastructure improvements throughout Missouri.

MoDOT collaborates closely with key law enforcement partners including the Missouri State Highway Patrol, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, St. Louis County Police Department, Kansas City Police Department, and Platte County Sheriff’s Office, as well as members of the truck and bus industry to promote safe travel in and around CMVs. MoDOT also develops awareness campaign materials to encourage the motoring public to share the road with large trucks and buses.

As a result of these ongoing efforts, Missouri experienced a decrease in both the number and rate of CMV-related fatalities in 2025. In 2025 alone, there were 21 fewer CMV-involved fatalities than in 2024, resulting in a fatality rate of 1.11, down from 1.29 the previous year. Despite these decreases, the number still exceeded the 2025 target of 110 or fewer fatalities.

Purpose of the Measure:

This measure tracks annual trends in fatalities involving Commercial Motor Vehicles. This data guides the development and focus of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Plan, which is the plan required to receive Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program funds.

Measurement and Data Collection:

Missouri law enforcement agencies submit a vehicle crash report form to the Missouri State Highway Patrol to be entered into a statewide traffic crash database.  The database automatically updates MoDOT’s crash database system, which is a part of the Transportation Management System.  The fatal rates on the charts display the annual fatality and injury rates per 100 million vehicle miles traveled for commercial motor vehicles for these same crashes.  The 2024 target was based on a 8.8% improvement rate from the Missouri Commercial Vehicle Safety Plan for 2024 as part of a long-term goal to achieve zero fatalities by the end of 2030.
