Purpose and Need

To address safety concerns related to at-grade railroad crossings, in particular the one just north of U.S. Route 60 and Greene Count Route MM. Three existing railroad crossings will be closed to reduce impacts to motorists. This project will also address current & projected congestion as this corridor becomes increasingly developed.

Project highlights:

  • Build new Route MM between Farm Road 160 and Route 60
  • Widening of Route MM to 4 lanes between Farm Road 160 and Haile Street
  • Roundabout on Route MM (Brookline Avenue) at Farm Road 160
  • 8" raised concrete median from Route 60 to Haile Street with breaks at new Stone Falls Road/Commercial St. intersection
  • Build a bridge over BNSF Railroad south of Haile Street
  • Farm Road 164 closed west of Route 60
  • Expand the existing intersection at Route 60 & Stone Creek Drive and connect to the new Route MM
  • Close BNSF Railroad crossings at Route 60 and Farm Road 170, Route MM and Farm Road 168, and East Haile Street/Orr Street in Brookline
  • Pedestrian trail along east side of the new Route MM from Route 60 to the pedestrian underpass east of new bridge over BNSF Railroad
  • Sidewalk and pedestrian access improvements from Route 60 to Haile Street
  • Estimated project cost: $22.7 million

 Traffic Impacts:

  • Route MM at Farm Road 160 to be CLOSED during construction of the roundabout
  • Lane closures on Route 60 near the existing Commercial Avenue/Farm Road 103 intersection
  • Stone Creek Road and Commercial Avenue/Farm Road 103 CLOSED at Route 60 for up to 90 days
  • Existing intersection at Route 60 and Commercial Avenue/Farm Road 103 permanently closed following project completion
  • Farm Road 164 west of Route 60 is permanently closed following project completion
  • Railroad crossings closed at Route 60 and Farm Road 170, Route MM and Farm Road 168, and East Haile Street/Orr Street in Brookline

Future Route MM Proposed Projects Partially or Not Yet Funded:

Route MM Widening North of Route 360:
  • Widening Route MM to 4 lanes between I-44 and north of Route 360/James River Freeway
  • Estimated Construction Cost: $18.2 million (partially unfunded)
Route MM Widening South of Route 360:
  • Widening of Route MM to 4 lanes from Route 360/James River Freeway to Haile Street
  • Intersection improvements
  • Estimated Construction Cost: $13.2 million (currently unfunded)
Route ZZ Extension:
  • Build new Route ZZ extending it between Route 60/new Route MM and Route ZZ (Wilson’s Creek Boulevard)/Route M (Republic Road) intersections
  • Build bridge over BNSF Railroad at Farm Road 103
  • Possible roundabout on new Route ZZ extension and Route ZZ (Wilson’s Creek Boulevard)/Route M (Republic Road) intersection
  • Estimated Construction Cost: $29.7 million (currently unfunded)

PROJECT UPDATES

Frequently Asked Questions:

When will the road closures take place?

Route MM at Farm Road 160 to be CLOSED for the construction of the roundabout.

There will be lane closures on Route 60 near the existing Commercial Avenue/Farm Road 103 intersection.

Commercial Avenue/Farm Road 103 and Stone Creek Road will be CLOSED at Route 60 for up to 90 days.

The BNSF Railroad crossings at Route 60 and Farm Road 170, Route MM and Farm Road 168 and East Haile Street/Orr Street in Brookline and the Route 60 intersection road closures at Farm Road 103, Commercial Avenue and Farm Road 164 will be closed toward the end of the project after the rest of the improvements are open to traffic.

How was this alignment chosen?

An alternatives analysis was performed to compare multiple alignments and intersection designs. The current layout was determined with considerations to environmental constraints and an effort to minimize impacts to adjacent property owners.

Why a roundabout at Farm Road 160?

A traffic study was used to compare intersection capacity between a signalized intersection and a roundabout at this location. A dual-lane roundabout with a free westbound to northbound right-turn was determined to result in the shortest delays and a reduced crash frequency.

What type of pedestrian improvements will be constructed with this project?

A 10-foot-wide multi-use trail will be built along the east side of the new alignment in coordination with the city of Republic between Route 60 and the railroad overpass, while a new sidewalk will continue over the railroad and north to Haile St. A pedestrian underpass will allow a safe connection for pedestrians between the east and west sides of the alignment.

Is MoDOT purchasing property from landowners?

MoDOT will need to purchase property and/or obtain easements in order to construct the realignment of Route MM, build the new sidewalk, and widen existing facilities.  A Right of Way representative will be contacting affected landowners to begin the acquisition process. For more information on the acquisition process, please see the Pathways of Progress display above.
