Project Summary
The Cooper County Route O bridge over Moniteau Creek was built in 1966 and the bridge deck is in poor condition. The supporting structures of the 241-foot-long bridge are in good condition, but the driving surface - the deck - needs to be replaced.
Project Progress
The Missouri Department of Transportation and a consultant team are designing a project to replace deck of the bridge. The estimated total cost (engineering and construction) for this project is $1,106,000. This cost may change.
The current scope of planned work includes replacing the bridge deck, bridge painting, replacing the roadway approaches to the bridge and placing rock on the slopes adjacent to the bridge.
Public Informational Meeting
An online, virtual public informational meeting will be held through Jan. 12. Downloadable exhibits outline the work being planned.
The public is invited to ask questions of the project team either online or by mail. Comments will also be accepted during this time. Mailed-in questions should be postmarked on or before Jan. 12 and addressed to:

The project is currently scheduled to be part of MoDOT's January 2024 letting when contractors may submit competitive bids. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded the contract to Gene Haile Excavating, Inc as part of their February 2024 meeting for the amount of $874,083. The notice to proceed was issued for March 11, 2024.
This project is being let in combination with a bridge rehabilitation project on Cooper County Route 5 at Petite Saline Creek.
The contractor closed the bridge to all traffic on Monday, June 24, 2024. Route O over Moniteau Creek was expected be closed for an estimated 90 days but was finished ahead of time in only 58 days.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why is MoDOT replacing the bridge deck?
Built in 1966, the deck or driving surface of the bridge has deteriorated to the point it needs replaced.
How will the construction affect traffic?
The bridge will be closed to all traffic during construction. The contractor will be allowed up to 90 days for the closure and motorists will need to plan an alternate route.
Why is MoDOT closing the road during construction?
MoDOT strives to be a good steward of taxpayer money. By closing the roadway at the Moniteau Creek Bridge, the contractor will be able to work more efficiently within a shorter construction period, saving taxpayer dollars and reducing the time construction will affect motorists.
