Districts Impacted
The Cooper County Petite Saline Creek Bridge on Missouri Route 5, near Billingsville, was built in 1985 and carries approximately 1,500 vehicles each day. The supporting structures of the bridge are in good condition, but the deck of the bridge has some wear, so new epoxy polymer wearing surface will be placed on the driving surface and expansion joints will be repaired. Additional work includes replacing the pavement approaching the bridge, repairs to the embankments near the bridge, and painting the bridge to ward off corrosion. The bridge will be closed during the project and a signed detour will be in place.
Project Progress
A project to replace the bridge deck is currently being designed by the Missouri Department of Transportation. The estimated total cost for this work, including engineering and construction, is $541,000. This cost may change.
The current scope of planned work is an epoxy polymer overlay, bridge painting, expansion joint repairs on the bridge, replacing the bridge approaches, and repairs to the stream embankment, including a scour hole.
Public Informational Meeting
An online, virtual public informational meeting is being held Dec. 27 – Jan. 12. Downloadable exhibits outline the work being planned and the proposed detour to be used during construction.
The public is invited to ask questions of the project team either online or by mail. Comments will also be accepted during this time. Mailed-in questions should be postmarked on or before Jan. 12 and addressed to:

Meeting Exhibits
All available exhibits regarding the project to replace the Petite Saline Creek Bridge deck rehabilitation project can be viewed using the links below.
The project is currently scheduled to be part of MoDOT's January 2024 letting when contractors may submit competitive bids. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission may award the contract as part of their February 2024 meeting and, if the contract is awarded, a notice to proceed date will also be given. That is the earliest date the contractor may begin work.
This project is being let in combination with a bridge deck replacement project on Cooper County Route O at Moniteau Creek.
At this time, construction is anticipated to begin May 28, 2024. Route 5 over Petite Saline Creek will be closed for an estimated 30 days. During that time, traffic will be redirected over a signed detour route.
Crews were able to reopen Route 5 to all traffic on Monday, June 24, 2024.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why is MoDOT rehabilitating the bridge deck?
Built in 1985, the deck of the bridge needs improvements made to the driving surface. Some of the expansion joints will be repaired and a planned epoxy polymer overlay will seal cracks in the bridge deck, extending its life, while also provided increased friction on the bridge’s driving surface.
How will the construction affect traffic?
The bridge will be closed to all traffic during construction. The contractor will be allowed up to 30 days for the closure and motorists will be directed to use a signed detour route over Routes J, B and I-70.
Why is MoDOT closing the road during construction?
Normally, an epoxy wearing surface can be applied while maintaining one lane of traffic. However, because the roadway approaches to the bridge are also being rehabilitated as part of the project, the roadway will be closed up to 30 calendar days.
As on all projects, MoDOT strives to be a good steward of taxpayer money. By closing the roadway at the Petite Saline Creek Bridge, the contractor will be able to work more efficiently within a shorter construction period, saving taxpayer dollars and reducing the time construction will affect motorists.
