Changes coming to northbound U.S. Route 63 work zone in Columbia

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – In an effort to improve the flow of traffic, changes are planned for northbound U.S. Route 63, south of Interstate 70, approaching long-term work zone between the Conley Road underpass and Broadway overpass. Starting Tuesday, through traffic will be pushed to the passing (left) lane allowing the driving (right) lane to be for vehicles entering and exiting the highway.

A traffic shift will take place between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Feb. 4, 2025. Construction crews working with the Missouri Department of Transportation will remove the current striping and restripe the road beginning at the Stadium Boulevard underpass for this new alignment.

The new configuration should reduce congestion, especially during peak hours, and improve the overall flow of traffic entering the work zone between the Conley Road underpass and Broadway overpass.

This work is highly dependent on a variety of variables including weather and road temperature.

This traffic pattern will be in place until construction crews complete building two new bridges on U.S. Route 63 as part of the overall redesign for the I-70/U.S. Route 63 interchange, which is one portion of MoDOT’s Statewide Improve I-70 Program. Improve I-70: Columbia to Kingdom City will add a third lane of travel in each direction to the 20-mile stretch of I-70 between U.S. Route 63 (Columbia) and Route 54 (Kingdom City). This $405 million fixed-cost contract includes new pavement on all three lanes of I-70 and will also make interchange improvements to the I-70 interchanges at U.S. Route 63 and U.S. Route 54. Improve I-70: Columbia to Kingdom City construction is scheduled for completion in late 2027.
