Project Summary

MoDOT, in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration, is finishing the re-evaluation process to update the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) of Interstate 70 (I-70) between U.S. 63 and U.S. 54.

As work to update the Environmental Impact Statement wraps up, Improve I-70 Columbia to Kingdom City has transitioned to a Design-Build project. Millstone Weber has been selected as the best-value proposer and Design-Build contractor of Improve I-70: Columbia to Kingdom City. This $405 million fixed-cost contract includes $123 million previously programed for the interchanges at U.S. 63 and U.S. 54. The winning proposal includes new concrete pavement on all three lanes of I-70 in each direction for the 20-mile section between Columbia and Kingdom City, wider inside and outside shoulders, and improved interchange designs at the U.S. 63 and U.S. 54 interchanges at I-70. Additionally, throughout construction two lanes of travel will be available for both directions of I-70 during peak hours.

This project is one of several projects which will widen the I-70 corridor across the state.  Construction began in July 2024 and is anticipated to be completed in late 2027.

Since its original construction more than 50 years ago, I-70 has been a vital lifeline for moving people, goods, and information across Missouri and beyond.

Project Goals

  • Deliver the project by the end of 2027 within the program budget.

  • Provide a third lane of travel for eastbound and westbound Interstate 70 from Columbia to Kingdom City.

  • Improve I-70/U.S. 63 and I-70/U.S. 54 Interchanges providing for better traffic flow and movement of freight.

  • Improve the interstate while modernizing the existing pavement and bridges

  • Minimize construction impacts through communication and construction staging while maintaining safety and mobility.

  • Provide expanded employment opportunities to a diverse workforce.

Upcoming Sound Barrier Meeting

Virtual Meeting (Microsoft Teams) - Wednesday, June 25, 2025

This meeting will be held virtually via Microsoft Teams on Wednesday June 25, 2025 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. central time. Link will be available soon.

As part of the Improve I-70: Columbia to Kingdom City project, a traffic noise analysis was performed. This analysis determined that areas along the project corridor will experience sound level impacts under design year (2045) traffic conditions. A noise impact occurs when a predicted design year noise level exceeds 66 decibels. Three sound barriers are recommended to mitigate for design year noise levels.

This meeting will focus on noise study areas within the Improve I-70: Columbia to Kingdom City project that qualify for noise abatement measures (Sound Barrier). The purpose of this meeting is to obtain public comments and ask residents to vote on whether or not Sound Walls should be constructed at the recommended locations. Note: Only the residents and  owners of the properties adjacent to the wall locations will be permitted to vote
