Innovation Description and Benefit:
The I-70 CSFG Design-Build Project constructed a precast arch structure to align Veteran’s Memorial Parkway under Cave Springs Blvd. The use of precast arches to construct this overpass allows for faster construction time which results in a costs savings. The time savings comes from the reduced time required to construct parts of a bridge structure above the pile cap. For the arch, a continuous foundation is poured in place of pile caps and the arch rests on top of this foundation. Once your foundation is ready the precast arches are placed, and a waterproof membrane is installed. This process took about two weeks, after which the arch is backfilled and ready for pavement. Comparing this to a typical bridge where there would be time required to allow for columns, beams, girders, bridge deck, and approach slabs.
