Innovation Description and Benefit:
Signal crews in the Northwest District needed to replace video detection, along with other work at a high-speed signal location in Maryville, Missouri. The original plan would have required multiple lane closures over several days, so the team came up with a plan to install a temporary roundabout that would allow traffic to proceed through the intersection while necessary work is taking place inside the closure. The work was completed in one day, without any incidents occurring and several citizens made positive comments on the intersection setup. The temporary roundabout reduced workers risk for flagging operations and exposure to traffic while the work was performed and improved the safety conditions. Traffic personnel worked with maintenance as well as design, communications, and several others including local and state law enforcement to ensure the plan was feasible and then communicated to the public.
